How we write our guides

Our guides explain, in plain language, how things work for newcomers in Northern Ontario — health cards, housing, schools, work and more. Here is how we put them together, so you can decide how much to rely on them.

Where the facts come from

We take facts from official sources: the Government of Ontario, the Government of Canada, cities and towns, and the settlement agencies that serve the North. Guides link to those sources so you can check them yourself.

Keeping guides current

Each guide shows when it was last reviewed. Rules, fees and phone numbers change, so always confirm the details with the official source before you apply, pay or travel.

What our guides are not

We are not a government office, a settlement agency, or legal, immigration or medical advisers. For advice about your own situation, speak to a licensed immigration consultant, a lawyer or a health professional. In an emergency, call 911.

Who pays for the site

Diaspora North is a free community service from DVG Systems, an IT company in Thunder Bay, Ontario, which pays to run it. Guides are never paid for. Basic directory listings are free; featured listings are paid and are labelled Featured. DVGVoIP, which appears in our directory, is part of DVG Systems and is labelled From our publisher.
